A documentary journey through three authentic restaurants in London
Extra Features
An Eritrean Maadi
This short film is about the traditional meal as prepared and presented by people living in Asmara, Eritrea. It was produced in Asmara by members and associates of the Eritrean Relief Association (UK). Seble Ephrem (ERA-UK Director)—who was a collaborator and advisor for Eating Cultures—produced the film in 2012 as a contribution to this PhD research project and as a response to an early assembly of London restaurant footage. Makonnen Woldeab was the videographer and editor.
Usage in Eating Cultures
Clips from An Eritrean Maadi appear in Eating Cultures; various aspects of food preparation and meal presentation are intercut presenting both contrast and correspondence between what is shown in Asmara and what is shown in London. The intercut scenes along with commentary from film subjects in Eating Cultures work to reveal the complexity of Eritrean identity as expressed through the meal in Asmara and the meal in London. See “The Eritrean meal” film clip for more on this and for an example of how the Asmaran footage is used in Eating Cultures.
